Thank you Nozomi-san

This is excellent information and I am looking forward to anything Makoto-san will present to us on the construction techniques of his psalteries.

Dear Mr. Bill Yoder,

Again, thank you very much for watching my videos.

The psalteries used in 叱られて 弘田竜太郎 have notes from F3 (some of them have E3) to C7.  I am not sure about what gauge of string is used for each note.  Nickel-wound strings are used for the note C4 and lower.

The psaltery used in the video Ye Banks And Braes of Bonnie Doon has notes from C3 to C8.  Nickel-wound strings are used for the note F4 and lower.

I am not sure what you mean by ‘spacing’.  If it means the space between the hitch pins,

  1. The instruments used in 叱られて all the spaces between the hitch pins are 20mm except for the space between F3 and G3 (45 mm).
  2. The instrument used in Ye Banks video

The space between the hitch pins from C7 to C8 is 10 mm.

From C6 to C7, 15 mm.

From C3 to C6, 20 mm.

As Dave-san commented, all of these instruments are made by Makoto Kato, who is also a member of Psaltery Strings.  He is not making the instrument that I used in Ye Banks video any more.  Instead he is making instruments which have the notes from C3 to C7 with a deeper body.  (Mine is 60 mm deep while the current instruments are 90 mm deep.  )

I will upload photos that would give you idea about how big these instruments are.

Finally Makoto told me to write here that he is planning to upload a video that explains about the psalteries he builds and playing techniques.

I hope some of the information is helpful for you.

Please send me information about the large psaltery. I am interested in the size, strings and spacing.

Thank you.

Thank you very much, Dave-san!

We are trying out many things to make bowed psaltery and banjo sound good together.  For example, in this video Tainaka-san is playing his banjo without using thumb pick or finger pick.  We are going to explore further on what we can do with bowed psaltery and banjo.

Well done Nose-san and Tainaka-san

You make the banjo and the psaltery sound so good together.
