Bowed Psaltery places 3rd in woodworking competition.

Posted on July 16, 2012 at 7:01pm 8 Comments

I recently entered a Bowed Psaltery in the largest juried woodworking competition in the country, "Design in Wood" in Del Mar, California. There are 24 categories  and over $25,000.00 in prize money.  I took 3rd place in the musical instrument category and I was thrilled. The instrument is made from Cherry Burl and is 37" long and 10" wide with 37 strings with 3 full octaves…

Hello Richard. I'm in Pismo Beach, CA. There are only a few of us in CA on this psaltery site. Your instruments are beautiful. I'm brand new to the psaltery, so I'm working my way up to one of your beauties.

Hi Richard, Good to see you here. Your name is familiar to me in the psaltery world, though we have never met. Good to see more builders and teachers joining. I have long admired your instruments when I've seen folks playing them at festivals and club meetings. I played next to a gentleman at a jam, a few years back, that was playing one of your smaller models. He was the only other person I had seen by that time using two bows to play. Everyone combined will make this "the" place to be if you have any interest in the bowed psaltery. Lots of good folks on here. Welcome!!

Hi Richard.
Great to have you aboard, hope you're fit as a fiddle.
I don't know why your email to me bounced, but is still my addy.
The psalteries you built for me continue to delight international audiences, and occasionally pop up on tv and radio.
Looking forward to your perspectives and offerings here.

This video is a personal favorite because it shows a unique type of bowed psaltery with a gorgeous sound. When I heard it I broke out in goose bumps!
