So sorry you're having frustations with wrench not seating and with strings breaking. Your guitarist friend might have tried but might not have known anything else to try to fix the strings from breaking but if you can get it to another psaltery maker (other than the one who made it) maybe there is a simple fix that hasn't been seen yet by those who have looked. It is almost certain there is a remedy. Peope have been fixing and refixing instruments for as long as they have existed and someone will know how to make yours less frustrating for you to tend to. Are you comeing to the Tamarack workshop this month?
I grew up in a musical family. On my father's side, living in my grandmother's home, we had two pianos and every stringed instrument in the orchestra. Everyone took music lessons and was expected to play at least two instruments. My mother's people were Appalachian, and the musical roots were deep and complex, from dulcimers and homemade banjos to all sorts of mouth and percussion instruments. Her father was a luthier and made violins (fiddles) and banjos. I thought I'd seen, heard or played every instrument there was till I was walking through the Tamarack gallery in West Virginia one day and heard the bowed psaltery. It immediately claimed a place in my heart and I knew I had to have one. Tish and Greg Westman made mine to order and I was never so happy to treat myself to a present. I hope yours brings you as much joy as mine does.
