This is a test to see if my upload of Skye Boat song is sucessful.  The recording was created using a single bowed psaltery on two audio tracks where one track was modified to an octave below the origional instrument and then combined into a single track.  The audio program I used is called "audacity".

Very, very nice Charlie and how timely. I've just upgraded the site and we now have a branded music player that we can upload songs to and play from (see the right column). I can add to the player on the main page but every member can add a player of their own to their page as well.

I will be sending out a broadcast message about it latter today or tomorrow.

Loved the recordings, particular Good King W.....if you would like me to add any songs to the main page player just ask, I won't add randomly though, people will have to give permission or request it!

Keep working on those recordings, I'm just starting to get into that myself. I have audacity but it won't run on my Windows 7 computer, I guess you have to do some kind of work around and I'm just not up to that so am looking at other options compatible with Windows 7.

Let us know what kind of equipment you have, do you have a built in pick up or did you use a microphone?

Hi Donna,  Audacity has a version 1.3 (Beta) which is their newest, but the "Beta" tells me they are still working on it.  They say it is the version to download for Windows 7.   I downloaded it a few days ago onto a new computer with Windows 7 and it works for me.  I have already used it a few times.

I tried again today (the 1.3 Beta) and it keeps locking up my system. I think I'll have to contact them or keep reading the posts from the other people experiencing problems!

Donna,

You're welcome to upload the MP3 file ( God Rest you merry gentlemen ) to the new Music player on the main page.  The first song in a .WAV format was just a test to confirm that I was doing something right.  I did find that converting my songs into a MP3 format made the upload process much faster since the size of the file was considerably smaller.

Sorry to hear about your issues with Audacity and Windows 7.  I use an older computer for my music stuff.  It has the older version of windows on it and a good audio/speaker system.  I do have Windows 7 and Vista on two other computers but haven't tested Audacity on them yet.  I'll look into that since I would like to continue to use the program and my older laptop will someday have to be replaced.

My current setup is an OLD Compaq Presario Laptop that has a very good sounding internal audio controller.  I use an inexpensive mic that is mounted in a small block of foam which I place under the psaltery on my lap when recording.  Background noise isn't really an issue since the foam helps to reduce outside noises and the volume of the Psaltery is very loud compared to any other audio.  I'm sure that a built-in pickup would also work fine ( I have one on my Octave mandolin ) but it would mean drilling more holes in the psaltery.

Tish's list is a valuable resource when searching for other players. http://www.westmaninstruments.com/Bowed_Psaltery_List.html

If you are already on Tish's list, why don't you stop in and update your info? While your there take a look to see if there are new players in your area. Who knows, you might get together and make a recording.
