I have a well loved tenor psaltery and am interested in getting a baritone.Any suggestions? In the past I bought a lovely hand made psaltery on-line. Unfortunately, it didn't sound as good as it looks. So now I'm leery of buying one I can't play first. Any ideas?
Hi Gail, I did a lot of studying and bought a baritone from Rick Long (Ringing Strings). Love the sound as well as beautiful construction. You can listen to his instruments online and discuss them with him personally to help find the one which will please you.
The web site offers lots of information so take a look.
I feel your pain. There are a lot of beautiful looking instruments out there that play like a brick with strings. My advice is to work with one of the well-known builders you'll find on this site. Some offer to let you try their instruments before you buy, but there is the expense of shipping them.
In my experience the really awful psalteries are those that come out of the Middle Eastern factories. They seem to be built from old packing crates.
