Donna, thank you for having me. I am so excited to have my psaltery. Hope to one day truly play it not just play with it. I was very impressed with Rick Long. I only read music enough to sing in our choir so I've very much to learn. Love psaltery music.

I started using Rick's numbered song books. Now working on playing from  notes,  I am working on  Wayfaring Stranger and  Londonderry Aire. Hope I am playing them right but any way learning how to hit the notes. Donna thanks for doing the book.

Thanks for the welcome

Thanks Bonnie, I will check it out. I got my psaltery two weeks ago but didn't get to try my hand until we got home from vacation. So just started trying to learn Mon. Never played an instrument so I've very much to learn. Excited to learn. Thanks again

The sound is what drew me to the psaltery at first! When I first got mine, I mentioned it to my hairdresser and she replied that she had had one for twenty years, but that it was under her bed! She got it out and we started playing together. That led to our playing in a nursing home where one of her other clients was the activities director. Then,...things just have grown from there. When I felt up to sharing the psaltery music with the minister of music at my church, she asked if I would consider playing the prelude or the offertory. After about a year of practice, she convinced me it was time! It went well and I've played several times, always with members coming up afterwards to find out more about the instrument. One member has bought one and we've played together recently for a service. More people are interested, so maybe eventually we'll have a group! It's exciting! The person who introduced me to the psaltery lives several hours away, so that we can't play together, but we're still hoping to figure out a way to do so sometime. So...you may find another player in your neighborhood too.

The first year I played about an hour every day and just enjoyed it without sharing with anyone, then since then playing for others has become a rewarding part of my life.

Thanks,Sue. So far there are 3 psaltery players close by and two of us have played for assisted living communities and some of us have played for church services at our churches. Bowed psalteries certainly do attract attention!

Check the Westman Instruments website for free sheet music that's coded especially for the bowed psaltery. Tish Westman calls it the Noted Notes system and has a trade mark, I think. Anyway, it makes "reading" music ridiculously easy. Look at www.WestmanInstruments.com
