Found this video searching for bowed psaltery items. This is an art video but credit is given to Rick Long for the "psaltery sounds"

Rick, did you let him record individual sounds so he could put together melody or did you let him record snippets of melody to add to the video?

I recently downloaded "psaltery sounds" to use with my finale program so that future MP3s for the sheet music of the month can at least sound somewhat psaltery. The sound in this video is much better but I"m wondering if it's because your psaltery and skills are involved or because it's actually phrases of music not individual notes or BOTH

the video won't is not embedable (is that even a word?) so here is a link to it on youtube...

Hi Donna,  Those sounds are actually bits and pieces of the sound clips I post with each psaltery I place on my website for sale.  They were altered in speed, and with the use of effects, to fit the mood of the art piece or poetry.  I liked it, so didn't say anything about the use and I also received a credit on the video.  Those sound clips are long gone from my website, so I guess pieces of them will live on in a You Tube video.  Here's a link to the first one from about two years ago.    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TCuLVkc6GEg   It's a sad one, but I liked it.

Hi Rick, he did a great job with the sounds though....of course he had your great playing and your great instruments to work with

wow, it was sad, but very pretty....did you ever speak to the fellow who used your music?  I'm just curious.

No, never did.  I didn't really have a problem with it.  I kind of liked what he did, just putting together various clips where I had just basically played scales to give an idea of the overall sound of the psalteries I was selling at the time.

He did do a nice job putting the sounds together.

Rick and Donna

At least he gives credit to everyone from whom he borrowed art, sounds, poetry, and music.

Just watching the video and hearing the random sounds enhances the experience.  The art encourages us to think differently and Rick's psaltery does a great job to set the stage.  I can imagine a positive effect for an art gallery or museum.  The random sound might cause me to stay longer.

One of the aquariums near me (Chattanooga or Gatlinburg?) has random sound that is artfully arranged and sets the stage for the aquarium experience.  These clips remind me of the aquarium and the positive experience at the aquarium.  The sound at the aquarium seemed to cause in me a sense of respect for nature and/or the sea.

For these youtube videos, it would have been easy to leave after a few seconds.  With the use of Rick's clips, I watched both videos all the way through.  I recognized the reuse of the same sequence of notes in the first video, but I stayed all the same.  I wonder what effect it might have on a person who doesn't know Rick and/or doesn't know of or play a psaltery.

Thanks for Posting Donna

Tish's list is a valuable resource when searching for other players. http://www.westmaninstruments.com/Bowed_Psaltery_List.html

If you are already on Tish's list, why don't you stop in and update your info? While your there take a look to see if there are new players in your area. Who knows, you might get together and make a recording.
