Just bought my first psaltery from the Early Music Shop in Saltaire in the UK. They were an absolute pleasure to deal with and my instrument should arrive next Monday or Tuesday.

I've got a book of basic introductory music and am quite excited now to see how far I can get with my extremely limited skills.

I'll keep you posted!

Best Wishes,

Congrats Dave!! Now oooohh the wait.lol

Just got shipping notification - arriving tomorrow.

Best Wishes,

So, Did it come? Did it come? Maybe you're with your Bowed Psaltery instead of online with us psaltery lovers! But tell us about it!

Yes - arrived safely.

Been an interesting few days, trying to make sure I've got the bow resined correctly and then the instrument tuned accurately - broken one string already. \Going to replace that later today.

Struggling through 'Tennessee Waltz' (as kindly provided on this forum) for the last few days.

Overall - very pleased and hopeful that I will soon be able to get past some of my inadequacies to produce a decent tune or two. Really looking forward to getting stuck in to playing/practicing.

Thanks for your interest.

Best Wishes,

Well, you know, there are always a few bumps when a new baby comes home!!

I spent a lot of daily time tuning my baritone when it was brand new.   It settles in after a while.  I use both a Snark electronic tuner, and a Korg. One time I couldn't figure out why the tuners said my F was an accurate F, but it sounded horrible. Turns out, I had tuned it a whole octave low!  Tennessee Waltz was one of my first attempts, too. I bet you'll find that you can pick out some tunes by ear. Have a good time!

Hi Sue - thanks for the words of encouragement.

I also have a Korg tuner, and am slowly getting to grips with tuning the instrument accurately - the instrument is such fun to play that the time spent now will pay dividends I'm sure.

Best Wishes,

Just a brief update - instrument is now fully tuned (and holding its tuning) and I am 75% of the way to being able to play "Tennessee Waltz".

Really enjoying this instrument.

Best Wishes,

Good for you!  As my music-therapist daughter says, "Music is its own reward." Isn't it fun?

Hope it's gone well so far.

This video is a personal favorite because it shows a unique type of bowed psaltery with a gorgeous sound. When I heard it I broke out in goose bumps!
